"Gary White - The Custom Hatter" September 21, 1954 - June 28, 2025

Gary Witkowski, better known as Gary White -- The Custom Hatter, passed away unexpectedly on June 28, 2025, at the age of 70, after navigating health challenges since the fall of 2024. A true original in every sense of the word, Gary lived a life stitched with creativity, independence, and unmistakable style.

Born and raised in Buffalo's Broadway-Fillmore neighborhood, Gary never strayed far from his roots -- and he didn't need to. He opened his custom hat shop in the very community he grew up in and built a life and career there, turning his craft into both an art form and a local landmark. For decades, his storefront was more than a place of business -- it was a place of connection, where stories were shared, reputations were made, and tradition was honored.

Gary spent his life handcrafting hats that were never just accessories -- they were reflections of identity. Whether it was a sharp fedora, a classic homburg, or something completely original, he brought hats to life with an artisan's touch and an artist's vision. His work reached far beyond Buffalo -- appearing in motion pictures, Broadway musicals, and on the heads of performers, collectors, and everyday people who appreciated authenticity.

Those who knew him will remember his no-nonsense charm, his deep love of music and history, his lifelong appreciation for classic cars, and the way he could spin a story with wit and warmth. He had a rare gift for connection -- whether it was across a workbench, during a sidewalk chat, or inside the shop where legends and locals alike came through his door.

Gary was deeply proud of his work, but even more proud of the relationships he built. He is survived by his daughter, Jenna; his brother, Art Jr.; and sister-in-law, Anna, family who loved him deeply, loyal customers from every walk of life, and friends who became chosen family. His legacy lives on in the countless hats he made -- and in the heads and hearts of those who wore them.

A Celebration of Life Gathering will be held on Sunday, July 27, 2025 from 4-7 PM, at Duende at Silo City in Buffalo, NY. All are welcome to gather, share memories, and honor Gary in the spirit he lived -- with authenticity, laughter, and of course, hats.

In lieu of flowers, please consider wearing a great hat in Gary's honor -- something bold, something personal, something that says you knew who you were. He would've loved that.
